Dr. Vijayasarathi Ramanathan, Sexual Health Physician from Sydney (Australia) visited Chettinad Health City on 17 November 2011 and gave a lecture.

The Reproductive Medicine unit invited Dr Vijayasarathi Ramanathan, from Sydney (Australia) for a guest lecture and faculty visit on 17 November 2011. Dr Vijayasarathi is a sexual health physician, Honorary Associate Lecturer and doctoral candidate with the University of Sydney and ASSERT accredited sexuality therapist. He is also the CEO/Founding Director of SSS Centre for Sexual Health (India) and more about him and his work could be found in www.sexualhealthindia.org

Dr Vijayasarathi did an hour-long presentation under three streams – research, clinical and academic. He started the presentation with due acknowledgement to the land, people and culture of Tamil Nadu. Findings from his doctoral research titled ‘Sexual health of Indian Migrant Men Living in Australia’ were shared. The research examines the possible impacts of migration (to Australia) on sexual attitudes & behaviours, sexual health and help-seeking behaviour among adult Indian men who currently live in Australia. Under the clinical stream (what he called ‘Mind the Gap’ he presented a real case scenario of an Indian couple in Australia who were about to be treated for infertility. He demonstrated a structured approach to address sexual health in a holistic manner and by keeping in mind the bio-psycho-social aspects of human sexuality. He clearly highlighted the difference between ‘sexual medicine’ and ‘sexual health’ and how the later is at the interface of physical health, mental health and happiness & well-being. Finally, he presented findings of a survey that he conducted among specialist health professionals in India. The health professionals’ current levels of knowledge and skills in sexual health and their learning needs were demonstrated.

The presentation was delivered with utmost clarity, in a timely manner and without losing interest of the audience from the beginning till end. Many questions and thoughts were exchanged between the presenter and audience. Copy of the entire presentation was made available to all faculty members. To obtain a copy of the same, please email vram4831@uni.sydney.edu.au

SUCCESSFUL SURGICAL INTERVENTION IN ORTHOPAEDIC ONCOLOGY -  LEADING TO SALVAGE OF PRECIOUS LIMB IN A PATIENT

PRESS RELEASE

Resection & Custom – mega prosthesis is a highly specialised Surgery done mostly for malignant (cancerous) tumours. This Surgery was performed on a locally aggressive, benign (non-cancerous) tumour, on a patient, on 14.04.2011, at Chettinad Hospitals, Kelambakkam under the expert guidance of Padma Laureate Prof. Mayilvahanan Natarajan, a pioneer in such surgeries in India and who also happened to introduce this unique surgery in our country way back in  1988. The Surgical team included Prof. M. Narayana reddy, H.O.D, Dept. of Orthopaedics, CHRI, Dr.S.G.Chander, Asst.Professor, Dept. of Orthopaedics, CHRI, Dr.Jayakumar, Vascular Surgeon and Prof. Gayathri and Prof. Lailu Mathews Anaesthesiologists of  CHRI .
Gowri a patient aged 23, hailing from an agricultural family in Thiruvannamalai, was admitted in Chettinad Hospitals with complaints
of  severe pain and swelling of   her left knee for the past 5 months.  Investigations revealed that she  suffered from a benign  tumour of the lower end of her left thigh bone. As the tumour had already penetrated the cortex (outer shell) of the parent bone, this condition was designated as a “Locally aggressive variety”. Therefore, conducting ‘Conventional’ surgery such as “Curettage & bone grafting” in such cases, leads to  high incidence of recurrence of the tumour, at the same site, in an even  more aggressive manner. The other Surgical options available would be to do either a RESECTION ARTHRODESIS (Knee fusion) or a RESECTION & CUSTOM – MEGA PROSTHESIS. The former shortens the affected leg and renders the knee joint stiff . The latter  not only helps preserve the length of the leg but also enables both mobility and stability to the knee which can help the patient to be back on her feet at the earliest.

Dr. K . Ravindran, Dean, Chettinad Hospitals & Research Institute, says’  I am really happy to note that our doctors at CHRI have performed a hi-tech surgery under the able guidance of the pioneer of this unique surgery in our country. We the doctors at CHRI are always prepared to render world class treatment, at affordable cost, to the poor and needy of the society.
